Since naming Yoán Moncada their starting third baseman in the spring, the Los Angeles Angels have seen the injury-prone infielder miss most of the season due to various health setbacks. His most recent issue has kept him out since early June. However, the team received encouraging news that a return might be nearing.
According to the team’s official PR account on X, Moncada is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment on Friday with the ACL Angels, the organization’s rookie-level affiliate in the Arizona Complex League.
While no official timeline was provided for Moncada’s return to the major league roster, the Angels are expected to be cautious with his recovery given his history of injuries.
Yoán Moncada begins rehabbing latest injury
Yoán Moncada is working his way back from right knee inflammation, an injury he sustained in late May. Although he initially attempted to play through the pain, it eventually became too severe, leading the Angels to place him on the 10-day injured list. Moncada had been hopeful it would be a short stint on the sidelines, but he’s now missed over a month of action.
The Angels signed Moncada to a one-year, \$5 million deal in the offseason, hoping the former top prospect could overcome his injury troubles and contribute offensively at third base. However, his health issues began early, with a thumb strain in spring training that he aggravated in April. That landed him on the IL for 23 games. Including his current absence, Moncada has missed 56 of the team’s 86 games so far.
Injuries have been a recurring theme throughout Moncada’s career. Since 2021, he’s battled a long list of ailments—including issues with his hip, oblique, hamstring, foot, back, thumb, and knee. Last season with the White Sox, he was limited to just 14 games due to a left adductor strain.
Despite these setbacks, Moncada has occasionally shown the talent that once made him one of baseball’s most promising young players. During his 30 games with the Angels this season, he has posted a strong .841 OPS with six home runs, 19 RBIs, 15 runs scored, and a 132 OPS+, offering a glimpse of what he can provide when healthy.
