As training camp approaches, the Washington Commanders are still grappling with off-field uncertainty surrounding star wide receiver Terry McLaurin. The two-time Pro Bowler continues his holdout after skipping minicamp, pushing for a long-term extension ahead of the final year of his current contract. His absence casts a shadow over what should be a promising season for a team coming off an NFC Championship Game appearance.
McLaurin’s stance is understandable. The veteran is fresh off a career year in 2024, posting his fifth consecutive 1,000-yard season while also notching a personal-best 13 touchdown receptions. His chemistry with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels gave Washington’s offense a new dynamic, one the team would clearly benefit from maintaining long-term.
Despite optimism from the organization, signs of progress have been minimal. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler recently reported McLaurin is “not happy with where things are with an extension,” and warned that the Commanders only have a short window left to avoid the situation dragging into training camp. Fellow ESPN insider Adam Schefter echoed that sentiment, telling The Pat McAfee Show there’s a “gap between what both sides would want” and that “no progress has been made.”
For the Commanders, this holdout couldn’t come at a worse time. The team has made major offseason moves — including adding Deebo Samuel and bolstering the offensive line with Terron Armstead — and is poised to contend again in 2025. But their chances of sustaining last season’s momentum could suffer if McLaurin’s contract standoff continues.
Simply put, McLaurin is a cornerstone of the franchise. If Washington hopes to build on its breakout year and make a serious Super Bowl push, resolving this situation quickly is imperative.
