UFC spokesperson addresses if promotion will add new rule after fighter got dropped 8 times

UFC Spokesperson Addresses Potential Rule Change After Fighter Dropped 8 Times in Bout

Following a controversial UFC bout in which one fighter was knocked down eight times before the fight was stopped, questions have arisen regarding the promotion’s rules and fighter safety protocols. The alarming scene has sparked widespread discussion among fans, fighters, and analysts about whether a rule change should be considered to limit the number of knockdowns a competitor can sustain in a single fight.

In response to the growing debate, a UFC spokesperson issued a statement clarifying the organization’s position on the matter. “Fighter safety is and always has been a top priority for the UFC,” the spokesperson said. “While there is currently no specific rule limiting the number of knockdowns in a fight, all bouts are subject to the judgment of the referee, who has full authority to stop a fight if a competitor can no longer intelligently defend themselves.”

The spokesperson emphasized that referees are trained to assess a wide range of factors during a bout, including a fighter’s responsiveness, body language, and ability to continue competing safely. “We trust our officials to make the right call in real time. In some cases, a fighter may recover quickly after a knockdown and show the ability to continue, while in others, a single knockdown may be enough to warrant a stoppage,” the spokesperson added.

Although the UFC is not currently planning to introduce a rule that would automatically end a fight after a certain number of knockdowns, the promotion acknowledged the concerns raised and stated that it continuously evaluates its rules and policies in consultation with medical professionals, regulatory bodies, and athletic commissions.

The incident in question has reignited calls for more standardized measures across MMA organizations to better protect athletes. Some have suggested implementing a “three-knockdown rule” similar to that used in
