ddie Hall vs. Brian Shaw: From MMA to Sumo
Eddie Hall, the 2017 World’s Strongest Man, is making headlines once again—only this time, it’s not in the cage, but the dohyō (sumo ring). In a recent YouTube video, Hall took on Brian Shaw, a four-time World’s Strongest Man weighing in at approximately 430 lb (~195 kg), in their latest friendly but fierce combat-sport experiment .
The British heavyweight showed off his versatility by hopping into the world of sumo wrestling with Shaw at a gym in Derby. Under the eye of coach Steve Pateman from the British Sumo Federation, both men warmed up against veteran sumo competitors. When Hall finally locked horns with Shaw, the match quickly turned riveting: after roughly 90 seconds of deadlock, Hall executed a powerful hip‑toss that sent them both out of the ring—and though the replay was close, the gym’s members voted overwhelmingly in favour of Hall as the victor .
Yet the bout came with a bit of a twist—literally. In a comic turn of events, Hall sheepishly admitted he “soiled himself” mid-match, fearing the worst with a “mud track” in his trunks after a nervous moment in the ring .
This lighthearted sumo session comes amidst ongoing discussions about Hall’s next MMA fight. Since April 2025, Hall is undefeated as a professional MMA fighter after brutally knocking out Mariusz Pudzianowski—a five‑time World’s Strongest Man—in just 27 seconds at KSW 105 in Poland .
Hall’s MMA career actually began in June 2024 with an unconventional two‑on‑one exhibition match against the Neffati brothers, which he approached in characteristic fashion and won by double knockout .
Despite those dominant displays, Hall has repeatedly clarified that he has no intent of chasing a world title within MMA. Instead, he enjoys high‑novelty, “freak‑show” contests—suggesting future matchups with icons like Dillon Danis, or even Logan or Jake Paul—but emphasizes the entertainment factor over serious sporting ambition . Although fans have thrown around rematch ideas with Pudzianowski and other strongmen, Hall has not settled on a firm date—but hinted at a possible return later in
