Nicholson Set for NSW Cup Return but May Have to Wait for First-Grade Recall

After a frustrating three-month spell on the sidelines, English forward Matty Nicholson is finally set to lace up his boots again, making his long-awaited return to action this weekend in the NSW Cup.

The 20-year-old back-rower has been recovering from a syndesmosis injury sustained earlier this year — an ankle issue notorious for keeping players out for extended periods. Nicholson, who joined the club with big expectations after making an impact in his debut season, has been working tirelessly through rehabilitation to get back on the field.

“I’ve been counting down the days,” Nicholson said earlier this week. “It’s been tough sitting on the sidelines, but I’ve tried to turn it into an opportunity to work on other parts of my game. Now I just want to get out there and play footy again.”

Strong Competition for a First-Grade Spot

While Nicholson’s return is a welcome boost for the club’s depth, breaking back into the NRL first-grade side may prove challenging in the short term. The team has been in strong form during his absence, with Simi Sasagi in particular stepping up and delivering standout performances in the back row.

Sasagi’s athleticism, defensive work rate, and attacking spark have made him one of the side’s most consistent contributors in recent weeks, and coach [Coach’s Name] has been reluctant to disrupt a winning formula.

“It’s a good problem to have,” the coach said when asked about Nicholson’s prospects. “Matty’s a quality player, and having him fit again adds to our options. But competition is fierce right now, and that’s exactly how we want it.”

Aiming to Build Match Fitness

Nicholson’s initial focus will be on regaining match sharpness in the NSW Cup, where he’ll be eased back into competitive minutes. After months of recovery, the coaching staff want to ensure he’s physically ready to handle the intensity and workload of first-grade rugby league.

His presence in the NSW Cup side will also be a timely boost as they push for finals contention, with Nicholson’s leadership and experience likely to lift the younger players around him.

“I know I’ve got to be patient,” Nicholson admitted. “The boys have been going great, and I just need to focus on my own performances. If I can play well in Cup, I’ll give myself the best chance of getting back into the NRL team.”

The Road Ahead

The upcoming weeks will be crucial for Nicholson. Strong performances in the NSW Cup could see him knocking on the door for selection, particularly if injuries or form fluctuations hit the first-grade squad. For now, though, his journey back is about more than just reclaiming his spot — it’s about returning to the game he loves after a challenging rehab period.

With Nicholson’s competitive edge, work ethic, and proven talent, few would bet against him eventually forcing his way back into the top squad before season’s end.
