Graham Potter has acknowledged that his West Ham United side remains a work in progress but insists that encouraging signs point to further improvement as the new Premier League season approaches.
The Hammers endured a mixed pre-season under Potter, who was appointed to bring stability and a fresh tactical approach following a turbulent campaign last year. While results have been inconsistent, the former Brighton and Chelsea boss believes his squad is adapting well to his philosophy.
“We know where we are in terms of development,” Potter said. “It’s a process, and we’re still putting the pieces together. There have been positive moments in pre-season, but we also understand there’s more work to do if we want to be competitive over the long term.”
Potter’s tenure so far has been marked by a commitment to possession-based football and an emphasis on fluid attacking play, contrasting with the more pragmatic style associated with his predecessor. However, he admits that implementing such a system takes time and patience.
“You can’t expect everything to click overnight,” he added. “The players are working hard, and the attitude has been fantastic. It’s about building confidence, understanding roles, and being brave on the ball. That comes with training and matches, so the more we play together, the better we’ll become.”
