David Gilmour – End of an Era: An Open Letter to Fans, Pink Floyd, and the Rock Community
To my dear friends, fans, and fellow musicians,
As I sit to write these words, I am struck by the extraordinary journey that has unfolded over the decades. From the first notes played in small clubs, to the echo of our music filling stadiums across continents, Pink Floyd has been more than a band. It has been a living, breathing experiment in sound, vision, and human connection.
The years have brought with them triumphs, challenges, and the passage of time that humbles us all. We have seen generations discover our music anew, each listener finding their own meaning in it. That is perhaps the greatest gift: the songs no longer belong only to us. They belong to you.
I have often resisted speaking in grand finalities. Yet, it feels right to acknowledge that we have reached the end of an era. Pink Floyd, as the world has known it, has lived its course. The music, however, remains timeless. It exists beyond any single one of us, and it will continue to resonate long after we are gone.
To my bandmates past and present—Roger, Nick, Richard in memory—you have shaped me as a musician and as a man. We did not always walk the same path, but the sparks from our collisions created something that neither of us could have made alone. For that, I am endlessly grateful.
To the fans: your unwavering support, your voices singing along in unison, your interpretations, your passion—these are the reasons we continued. I cannot thank you enough for carrying the music forward.
Now, as Netflix explores the possibility of telling this story in an official documentary, I hope it serves as a thoughtful chronicle of not just the band’s history, but the spirit of collaboration, conflict, and creativity that defined us. This is not a goodbye to music, for I will continue to play, to write, to explore. But it is a farewell to the chapter called Pink Floyd.
May the echoes remain.
With gratitude and love,
David Gilmour
