Selwyn Cobbo quits Brisbane Broncos after salary-cap squeeze
The 23-year-old winger/centre โ Cobbo โ has decided to leave the Brisbane Broncos at the end of the 2025 season after persistent salary-cap pressure forced the clubโs hand. The departure was driven by a crunch: the Broncos recently prioritised re-signing veteran players, leaving little budget for renewing Cobboโs contract.
In June 2025, the Broncos extended the deals of key players including captain Adam Reynolds, centre Kotoni Staggs and hooker Blake Mozer โ a move that reportedly sucked up much of the clubโs available cap space.
Cobbo, who had been on roughly A$650,000 this season, would likely have had to accept a significant pay-cut to stay โ a prospect he evidently found unacceptable.
Instead, he will join the Dolphins for 2026 under a one-year deal โ giving him a fresh start away from the cap squeeze at Brisbane.
The exit marks the end of a promising but increasingly uncertain chapter at Brisbane, where Cobbo had earlier enjoyed success โ including State of Origin honours โ but recent back-line reshuffles and contract-priorities have left him edged out.
