Cameron Boozer’s Mom Doesn’t Hold Back Frustration at Michigan State for Offensive Chant Targeting Duke Star
Cameron Boozer has heard loud arenas before. The Duke freshman phenom has already stepped into some of the most hostile environments in college basketball, from Tobacco Road battles to ACC rivalry nights that feel more like prizefights than games. But Tuesday night’s showdown at the Breslin Center turned into a flashpoint far beyond basketball.
Midway through the second half of Duke’s highly anticipated matchup against Michigan State, a section of Spartans fans unleashed a chant directed at Boozer—one that crossed the line from classic college taunting into personal territory. While the broadcast mics barely caught the audio, videos circulating online after the game made it clear enough: the chant wasn’t witty, wasn’t clever, and wasn’t rooted in competitive banter. It was offensive.
And no one took issue with it more than Cameron Boozer’s mother, Cindy Boozer, who was in attendance.
According to multiple spectators, Cindy initially tried to ignore the noise, focusing on her son’s composure as he battled through a tight contest. But as the chants grew louder and more coordinated, she couldn’t stay silent. After the game, she spoke with local reporters outside the arena, delivering a raw assessment of what she witnessed—an emotional moment that quickly went viral among college basketball fans.
“I’m all for passion. I’m all for rivalry,” she said. “But what happened tonight wasn’t about basketball. When you target a kid—my kid or anybody’s kid—with something ugly, that’s not fandom. That’s unacceptable.”
Her frustration wasn’t directed at the entire Michigan State fan base. In fact, she praised the majority of Spartans supporters for their energy and sportsmanship. Her issue was with the small but vocal group whose behavior tainted an otherwise electric atmosphere.
“It only takes a handful to make a whole arena look bad,” she added. “This is supposed to be about young men competing at the highest level. They deserve better—every one of them.”
