West Ham United have opted against offering Michail Antonio a new contract, signalling the end of the road for one of their modern era stalwarts and dashing his hopes of a fairytale return following his devastating car crash earlier this year. The surprise capture of Callum Wilson from Newcastle United has effectively closed the door on any possibility of Antonio reclaiming his place in David Moyes’ squad.
Antonio, 34, has been undergoing rehabilitation since suffering serious injuries in a high-speed collision in March, which left his vehicle mangled and raised fears over his long-term future in football. The Jamaica international harboured ambitions of making an emotional comeback and was confident he could still play a role at the top level.
However, with his contract expiring at the end of June and West Ham keen to refresh their forward line ahead of a Europa League campaign, the club’s hierarchy have taken the difficult decision not to renew his deal. It marks the end of a remarkable nine-year spell in east London during which Antonio became a fan favourite thanks to his tireless work-rate, physical presence and knack of scoring important goals.
Signed from Nottingham Forest in 2015, Antonio has reinvented himself numerous times, playing as a winger, full-back and ultimately a centre-forward. He leaves as West Ham’s record Premier League scorer with 64 goals in the competition.
Yet sources inside the club say Moyes felt it would be too big a gamble to wait on Antonio’s recovery, especially after securing the services of Wilson in a £15 million move. The England international, two years Antonio’s junior, is seen as a more dependable option after scoring consistently in recent seasons despite his own injury battles.
Antonio is understood to be disappointed by the decision but remains grateful to West Ham for the support shown throughout his rehabilitation. He had hoped to prove his fitness during pre-season but has now reluctantly accepted he must look elsewhere for his next challenge.
Several MLS and Middle Eastern clubs have already enquired about his availability, while a return to the Championship has not been ruled out should he wish to remain in England.
