Exclusive: Adidas Cancels Real Salt Lake & Toronto FC 2025 Archive Third Kits
In a surprising turn of events, Adidas has officially scrapped the planned “Archive Third Kits” for both Real Salt Lake and Toronto FC for the 2025 Major League Soccer season. The decision, which sources close to the league say was finalized in late August, comes as a blow to fans who had been eagerly anticipating the return of retro-inspired designs that were set to celebrate each club’s history and unique visual identity.
The Archive Kit initiative was first introduced by Adidas in 2023 as part of its partnership with MLS. The concept was simple yet effective: offer clubs a limited-edition third kit drawing inspiration from iconic moments in their past. These designs quickly became fan favorites, selling out across various markets and becoming collectors’ items. For 2025, Real Salt Lake and Toronto FC were among the clubs scheduled to receive their turn in the spotlight, but the plans have now been abruptly halted.
Industry insiders suggest that production delays and logistical challenges played a significant role in Adidas’ decision. With global supply chains still under pressure and kit demand soaring ahead of next summer’s international tournaments, Adidas reportedly chose to prioritize first and second kits for all MLS teams rather than pushing forward with limited third releases. The company has also faced mounting criticism over kit uniformity in MLS, with many supporters calling for more variety and creative freedom for clubs.
For Real Salt Lake, the cancellation is particularly disappointing. Early concept leaks suggested their Archive Kit would have revisited the club’s bold claret-and-cobalt striped look from the late 2000s, a period when RSL cemented its status as an MLS Cup champion. Toronto FC fans, meanwhile, were excited by the prospect of a nod to the club’s early 2010s era, a time when players like Dwayne De Rosario and Sebastian Giovinco brought flair and recognition to the Canadian franchise.
Fan reaction online has been swift and critical. Many supporters have expressed frustration with Adidas, arguing that the third-kit program gave clubs a rare chance to showcase individuality in a league often accused of “cookie-cutter” designs. Some have even suggested MLS should consider exploring partnerships with alternative kit suppliers in the future.
While Adidas has not ruled out revisiting the Archive series at a later date, the cancellation of the 2025 editions for Real Salt Lake and Toronto FC underscores the delicate balance between commercial priorities and fan expectations. For now, supporters of both clubs will have to wait—and hope—that their teams’ iconic pasts are honored on the pitch in seasons to come.
