Police Probe Attempted Break‑In at Wellesley Mansion Linked to Jaylen Brown & His Mother
WELLESLEY, Mass. — Police are investigating an attempted burglary at a mansion in Wellesley, Massachusetts, owned by NBA star Jaylen Brown and his mother, Mechalle Brown. The incident occurred on the evening of Sunday, December 15, while the Boston Celtics were playing the Washington Wizards in Washington, D.C.
According to Wellesley police, officers responded to a call around 8:20 p.m. after the homeowner reported signs of forced entry, including a broken window and a damaged lock. Surveillance footage retrieved at the scene reportedly shows three men in gray sweatshirts attempting to gain entry. Despite the break‑in, nothing appears to have been stolen or disturbed, and no injuries were reported.
At the time, Jaylen Brown was away with the Celtics, but his mother and nephew were at home. Lieutenant Marie Cleary noted that detectives were dispatched to investigate, and emphasized that it “did not appear that anything had been disturbed inside the residence nor did it appear that anything was taken from the residence.”
The break‑in follows a pattern of thefts targeting professional athletes. Over the past year, the homes of other high‑profile players—including NFL stars Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Joe Burrow, as well as NBA players Bobby Portis and Mike Conley Jr.—have been burglarized while the athletes were away for games. In Mahomes’ and Kelce’s cases, NFL and NBA authorities warned of sophisticated “transnational South American crime rings” that exploit public schedules and social media to time their crimes.
Brown missed a Celtics practice following the incident to be with his family, though he returned soon after. In a statement, the Celtics said, “The safety of Celtics players, families, and staff is of the utmost importance to us … we are working with authorities.”
Neighbors expressed concern over the incident. One resident told local media that hearing breaking glass while their children were inside felt particularly chilling.
Law enforcement continues to review surveillance video and follow leads. Authorities are urging residents to use home security systems and to stay vigilant. The incident underscores growing security concerns for the families of elite athletes, especially when they are traveling.
