MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – July 6, 2025 — West Virginia women’s soccer just got a major lift ahead of the 2025 season. The Mountaineers have officially secured the services of highly rated Canadian defender Christina Salama — a versatile and intelligent backline presence who is expected to make an immediate impact in Morgantown.
Originally from Montreal, Quebec, Salama arrives at WVU after spending her freshman year at Purdue. Though she redshirted during the 2024 campaign, her move to West Virginia signals a new chapter for one of Canada’s most promising young defenders.
Head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown wasted no time expressing her excitement about the acquisition:
“Christina is an incredibly gifted and versatile player. She’s calm under pressure, technical on the ball, and reads the game very well. We’re thrilled to welcome her to the Mountaineer family.”
Salama brings more than just defensive solidity. Known for her ability to contribute in multiple positions along the back line, she also has the stamina and vision to join the attack when needed — traits that make her a perfect fit for WVU’s up-tempo, possession-based system.
Her soccer journey includes standout performances in Canada’s elite youth circuits, where she was praised for her maturity, discipline, and tactical acumen. With experience training at a high level and the hunger to prove herself, Salama’s transition to the Mountaineers is expected to be seamless.
As West Virginia reloads its roster with championship ambitions in mind, Christina Salama stands out as a foundational piece for the program’s present and future.
Get ready, Mountaineer Nation — this backline just got a lot stronger.
